I'm a strong believer in the saying that you are where you want to be... For example, you live where you do because you choose to, and you earn as much as you do because that's what you've chosen to earn...

Well, I've been there too and unless I changed my belief and my habits (good or bad)... nothing was ever going to change.

Indeed, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...

So, how did I, and how do you, make changes to what we believe... and, in turn, what we achieve?

Well, for me, I didn't believe that I should live in a large house, drive a sports car, or even work for myself. So, if I believed that... I certainly wasn't going to 'realise' that lifestyle.

Does that make sense?

However, once I'd had enough of what I was doing...

(and for me this was commuting each and every day, having to answer to a boss, working long hours and not earning enough money for all my hard work...)

I needed to change my belief... My belief of where I saw myself and what I saw myself doing.

I hope you're still with me, as this is crucial to where you are and what you're doing in 12 months time, 2 years time and even 10 years time.

So what do you need to do?

Well, you really do need a goal, a visual representation of where you see yourself in 2 months time, 4 months time, and 6 months time...

Close your eyes and picture yourself in front of your new house, or sitting in your office at home – working for yourself... Driving your new car, or planning that luxury holiday you've always wanted... and enjoying your financial freedom that your new home-based online business has given you.

Now, what do you need to change... in order to make this happen? For me, I was wasting a few hours here and there watching television, or just trying to switch off (after a long day working for someone else). Well, these hours add up, so if you use these hours just to start thinking... then you've changed perhaps one of the worst habits out there.

If it's not TV, then look at how you spend each and every hour of your day... Can you allocate an hour or so for your future?

Plus, it makes your dreams real – something that you can indeed touch and feel.

Dreams are good – dreams are what keep us going, but dreams are nothing without action!

If you're thinking of working from home by someone else's rules, though, you have to realise that at least 99% of the offers out there are scams – after all, if it was that easy to pay a few dollars and make thousands, wouldn't everyone be doing it by now? Here are the biggest scams out there, how to recognise them, and how to avoid them.

Location, Location, Location.

Where did you see that work from home offer? If you got it in the post, or by email, or saw it on a poster taped around a telephone pole, then I can guarantee you right now that it's not a legitimate offer. If you saw the ad in a newspaper, in a jobs magazine or on a jobs website, then it's a little more likely to be legit – but not much. Always check out any offer, and assume it's a scam until you have iron-clad proof to the contrary.

Envelope Stuffing.

This is the most established work-from-home scam, and it's been going for decades now. Basically, once you pay your money and sign up to work from home, you're sent a set of envelopes and ads just like the one you responded to. You might make some money if someone responds to your ad, but eventually there just won't be a market for it any more. Anyway, work from home offers like this are illegal pyramid schemes.

You won't make any money putting letters in envelopes – get over it.

Charging for Supplies.

The practice of charging for supplies is hard to pin down to any one scam – it's the way almost all work-at-home scams work (including the envelope stuffing, above). You'll be asked to make a small 'investment' for whatever materials would be needed to do the work – and then you'll be sent very shoddy materials that aren't worth anything like what you paid, and you'll find that there's no market for the work anyway.

If anyone asks for money upfront, run. A real company should be willing to deduct any 'fees' from your first paycheque – if they won't do that for you, then that's because they don't ever plan to pay you.

Working for Free.

This variation on the scam is common with crafts. You might be asked to work at home making clothes, ornaments or toys. Everything seems legitimate – you've got the materials without paying out any money, and you're doing the work. Unfortunately for you, when you send the work back, the company will tell you that it didn't meet their 'quality standards', and will refuse to pay you. Then they'll sell on what you made at a profit, and move on to the next sucker.

Never do craft work from home unless you're selling the items yourself. Note that you don't need to be selling to consumers (you could be selling to wholesalers), but you still need to be the one deciding what you make and getting the money.

Home Typing, Medical Billing, and More.

There are lots of work-from-home scams that involve persuading you that some industry has more work than it can handle, and so has to outsource to people working from home. For example, you might be told that you'd be typing legal documents, or entering medical bills into an electronic database. These scams have one thing in common: they all say that all you need is your computer, and they all then go on to say that you need to buy some 'special software'.

This software might appear to be from a completely unrelated company, but don't be fooled – the whole reason the 'work-from-home' ad was there to begin with was simply as cynical marketing for the software.

As you can see, running a 'home business' that just involves 'working' for one company is a bad idea. You don't know who you're dealing with. Here's the clincher, though: even with entirely legal work-at-home offers that do pay you for your work, you still won't make anywhere near as much as you can with your very own home business. So why bother with them at all?

Your plan is on paper so you can forget about everything else except that one step you promised yourself you'd finish today.

Establishing this focus has been the biggest lesson I have learned over the last few years and has had a massive result on my productivity and consequently my results.

My business is now growing at a pace I could only have wished for just a few short years ago.

Hundreds of back links will not get you ranked well with poor content. Great content will get you good keyword positioning with or without back links, therefore, content is still the most important aspect of your website. Great design, flash, graphics, and a cool banner will not get you ranked well for your keywords and phrases. Great content will!

Let's first look at the content in your website. Images are great with alt tags. That helps. But it is the text on the pages that, when done correctly, will help your search engine results. This text is also what will convert your customers into sales.

This text is what your customers will read or not read based on it's quality. This same text is what the search engines will analyze when they decide how relevant your WebPages are to the search phrase you wish them to send you visitors from.

Now, let us talk about article marketing.  If you know about article marketing at all, you know you will be submitting articles all over the web. The links in the author bio at the bottom return visitors to your website if they read and like the articles, you write or have written for you.

Just having your articles in thousands of article directories is not the goal of article marketing, although there are article-marketing gurus out there who think it is. The goal is for webmasters to find those articles and place them in their blogs and websites. If they use your article, their website or blog is likely related to the same topic as your website.

You are looking for these quality links. The links for just being in the article directories do not hurt you, but they do not help nearly as much as those from related websites do.

Your other hope is that thousands of people read your articles. Do you really want people to read poorly written articles and associate that poor quality with your website? Well-written articles get people to read them all the way to the bottom where your links are located. Well-written articles reflect well on your website.

If the articles are of great quality then likely your products and services must be great as well. The reverse is also true in the reader's minds. If the articles are written poorly, then likely your products and services are of little or no value as well. It is not only about the number of keywords and phrases placed into the article folks.

With all of that being said, I still find all over the web, especially at freelancer websites, people going in and saying things like; "I need 400 articles written for SEO and I'm willing to pay $1.50 per article." Or they say something like; "I need someone to write content for my website and I'm only willing to pay $10 per page."

I really try to refrain from telling people they are, well . . . stupid, but I am finding it harder and harder each day when I read this stuff.

They will spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to have their website designed so it looks really pretty, but the text, the stuff that will actually get good search engine results and sales, they don't want to spend any money on.

Writers that know how to write text that not only is appealing to the reader, but that is also written with the keywords and phrases in mind, are worth being paid well. The moment you start hiring better writers and paying for text that converts sales, you will begin to be successful on the web. That cheap content is not going to make you any money.

A website that is beautiful but gets no traffic and sales may as well be an ugly website. An ugly website that ranks well in the search engine and that makes sales gets more beautiful by the dollar.

But how does blogging affect an organization's Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP)? In order to address blogging accurately in an AUP, you must first define what constitutes a blog.  The word "blog" is actually a shortened version of "web log" and is similar to a message board in that one can post thoughts and opinions to be read by others.  A blog can be viewed by the public or accessible only via password depending on how the owners have set it up.  Blogs can provide in-depth information about specific topics or they can be a place for writers to vent their feelings, but their ultimate goal is to bring readers together and then encourage interaction among them.

Blogging can be a harmless and interesting way to communicate with like-minded others but, like any unmanaged activity, the opportunity for abuse is always there. If an organization's AUP addresses their Instant Messaging, Peer-to-Peer, email and other Web-based communications, they need to consider blogging as an important technology to include. Organizations should decide of they want their employees to be able to read blogs or post to them as part of an overall communications policy.

What are the ramifications of no AUP where blogs are concerned? The rapid growth rate of blogs in the country means that entire services like MyFamily.com and MyPlace.com are hosting communities of bloggers. A criminal utilized personal data posted in some blogs to stalk and attack young high-school girls. 

Employees that post their identities and information to a response on a blog can influence decisions. For example, if an employee of a major computer corporation responded to a technical blog with advice about avoiding a new product line because of a lot of known 'bugs' the company is leaving itself open to legal exposure. Corporations require employees to sign non-disclosure agreements for a reason, the threat of exposure where company confidential information and intellectual property is concerned could have devastating financial consequences.

This is only one example, there are many others.  If a person severely disagrees with the content of a blog and starts what is known as a 'flame' war with the blogger through the comments section, the corporation may be held liable for the harassment if the employee is posting the responses through the corporation's computers. What happens on company computers, whether permissible or not, is the responsibility of the company. They are considered legally culpable.

There are legal and financial reasons to be very clear in the AUP with regards to blogging. Some corporations, although only a small percentage, employ software that screens where and how an employee can browse the web. If there are filters preventing an employee from viewing a pornographic website, then there can be filters that prevent the viewing of political or day trading blogs. Blogs that focus on financial and business issues are growing more popular every day. These blogs may be a source of entertainment and information, but it is up to the corporation to decide the level of involvement that an employee may have.

It's worth mentioning that anonymous guests can read most blogs, although they may not be able to post comments or responses. Blogs can be enormous resources for students, educators and other individuals for discussion, debate and the sharing of experiences. However, they need to be controlled and monitored.  Blogs are an excellent marketing tool, hooking visitors into the site by providing them with financial advice or credit building tips, for example. The marketing a blog can provide can translate into tens of thousands of hits a day for a site. It's also important for some companies to get their message out there; blogs can put a human face on a company that seems only to be a corporate entity. That human face can improve customer relations, invite consumer contact and increase company visibility.  However, employees should be educated about the type of information they are allowed to post if they are allowed to respond.

Companies that maintain their own blogs should be particularly attuned to the commentary they generate. Blogging is a new frontier for the corporate world, but as with many prior innovations, they are quickly taking advantage of it.  Security, awareness and education will help corporations, employees and even their families from suffering negative experiences while blogging, reading blogs or responding to a blog on the Internet.

At the very least, a company should have a Corporate Identity Guide that contains the design and print specifications of everything from business stationery to vehicle livery. It doesn't have to be a printed guide. Many companies make this information available to appropriate staff and suppliers via a secure section of the company website.

A Corporate Identity Guide is useless if its guidelines are not enforced. The simplest way to protect corporate identity is by using the technology that is available to us via web to print systems.
